Purpose and Goals

Hello everyone! My name is Abby Cuizon and I am a junior at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. I knew during my undergraduate years that I would end up studying abroad, and now that time has come. I will be studying through UNK at Palacký University in Olomouc from March 15- May 9, 2020. I am so very excited to start this three-month adventure with 11 other students from UNK.

This is an adventure of a lifetime I am excited to share with everyone. As I am preparing for my departure on March 11, I have had several emotions that I have experienced. One of them is nervousness. I am experiencing a whole new culture I am unfamiliar with and staying in a new country for three months. I am nervous about all the things that can go wrong especially with flights and language. Although, I have taken it upon myself to study the Czech culture so I can understand their way of life. I want to ease my nervousness by understanding more about their culture, ways they get around town, and most importantly learn their language to the best of my ability. Another emotion I have experienced is excitement. I am excited to travel with 11 female students from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. I am unfamiliar with some of the students so developing new relationships is something I am looking forward to. As a social work major, forming relationships is one thing that we value the most. We love getting to know each other and creating a unique bond with people.

The purpose of my study abroad excursion is to develop new relationships with the locals and other Czech students and to observe what life is like in a different country. I am so used to the American lifestyle, that I am looking forward to seeing how different jobs and careers look like in the Czech Republic. Some of my goals to achieve my purpose is to continue to study about Czech history and its culture as well as learn its language. Language is a huge barrier and can sometimes be offending to the locals if we don’t understand their language. I will make it my mission that I am learning something new every day while I am abroad. I want to continue to work hard while I am at Palacký University and take every moment I have overseas to admire its rich culture and history.
